Hey! If you are reading this guide, you are probably an enthusiast of virtual reality, or you’ve come here for the first time and just wondering if the virtual reality will just draw you in. Thanks to this guidelines, at a very early stage you will find out if you have the basic equipment required to play your favorite PC games in virtual reality. I invite you!
Computer
It would seem that a computer to play in virtual reality should not have special requirements. After all, if the games are running on a computer, will they also work in VR?
Of course yes … but no. I’m in a hurry with the translation: If the game on your monitor works in 27 FPS (frames per second), if you display it in so many frames on goggles, it will be very uncomfortable. So what requirements should a VR computer meet?
It’s hard to give specific requirements because it depends on the games you want to play. So how can you check it?
It’s easy: To play VR, I recommend that the game would be in 60 cages – but do not worry! If you have played so far, let’s say it is Euro Truck Simulator 2 in 1920 × 1080 resolution with ULTRA settings and you have 30 frames – you know that for VR each game is running in 1024 × 768 window, which should already strongly increase the amount frames, and you can always lower the graphics settings for even better performance.
What can you do?
Install any program showing the number of frames in the game and run the game in a window at 1024 × 768 resolution and check if it reaches min. 50-60 frames. If you do not achieve so many frames with the current graphics settings – try to lower the settings to get 60 frames. In other case scenarios, you can always look for the best online shopping deals, and upgrade your hardware by hunting for the best sales.
If you fail: remember that there are plenty of games that you can run without problems in 60 frames even on a very weak computer, and in the worst-case scenario you can play your games in 30 frames. Unfortunately, it will not be a comfortable experience and the picture will be blurred when looking around. It will not be the full experience of virtual reality.
Telephone
Telephone is the second indispensable tool for VR cardboard, what must it do?
The first most important thing is the operating system. Currently, the most popular supported platform for playing PC games on VR goggles is the Android system.
Fortunately, it is a very popular platform. If you have a phone with this system, it’s a good way to play VR!
What else needs to fulfill the phone?
- Screen size – here, depending on the goggles, recommended screen sizes are minimum 4.5 inches and max is even 5.5 inches. Small telephones – below 4.5 inches, unfortunately, are not very suitable for VR because they do not provide a large field of view in the goggles.
- Screen resolution – VR toys such as goggles work on a very simple principle: the image from your phone with special lenses is enlarged several times to such a size that it fills your field of vision as much as possible.
It gives the feeling of being in the displayed stage. Unfortunately, the resolution of the screen – the bigger – the sharper and more accurate the picture will be. With some goggles it is possible to play on the phones with HD resolution (720 × 1280), unfortunately, the better design results in the fact that pixels are very visible in HD resolutions.
Some do not bother and play, unfortunately, it is not very comfortable and it is recommended to min. FULL HD (1080 × 1920). The rule is that the higher the resolution, the better for our impressions.
VR Goggles
The selection of goggles on the market is huge, there are more and more manufacturers. It is very easy to buy goggles that are not suitable for playing VR games. We often buy goggles that look very nice and professional but in practice, they give us a low field of view and a very poor sense of immersion – being in the virtual world. Yet it’s very good gift idea.
